“Beaumarchais, the Forgotten Founding Father?” Roundtable (in English), followed by readings and music.

Reading: "Beaumarchais, Lettres aux Américains"

The Department of French and Francophone Studies is hosting a one-day colloquium on Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. A famous playwright (Le Mariage de Figaro) and musician, Beaumarchais was instrumental in convincing the French monarchy to support the American Insurgents. This colloquium will focus on his role as a go-between during the War of Independence, but will also explore other aspects of Beaumarchais’ life and works. A team of French and American scholars currently working on a new set of archives (especially letters) will present their research project.
